Department of Informatics
Floor plans BIN building
The department's main building is the BIN building at Binzmühlestrasse 14. Our Robotics and Perception Group is located in the AND building on Andreasstrasse 15, about 150 m from the main building (see map above).
Zurich Public Transport (trams and busses) is called Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV).
Tram # 14 - From the tram stop "Bahnhofquai" (just outside the main station by the Limmat river) take line 14 direction Seebach. In about 17 minutes you will reach the tram stop "Bahnhof Oerlikon Ost". Get off, turn right into Binzmühlestrasse, cross over Friesstrasse and follow Binzmühlestrasse on the left side. After about 200 m, you'll reach our offices at Binzmühlestrasse 14.
Tram # 11 - From the tram stop "Bahnhofquai" (see above) you may also take line 11 direction Auzelg. In about 19 minutes you will reach the tram stop "Leutschenbach" which is located on Thurgauerstrasse, at the intersection with Binzmühlestrasse. Get off, walk to the intersection and turn right into Binzmühlestrasse. You reach our department after about 100 m on the right hand side of Binzmühlestrasse.
Tram # 10 - From the tram stop "Zurich Flughafen, Bahnhof".
The tram stop is located on the departure level of the airport. Take line 10 direction Bahnhofplatz/HB. In about 11 minutes you will reach the tram stop "Leutschenbach" which is located on Thurgauerstrasse, at the intersection with Binzmühlestrasse. Get off, walk to the intersection and turn right into Binzmühlestrasse. You reach our department after about 100 m on the right hand side of Binzmühlestrasse.
Tickets: Before boarding a tram, you need to buy a ticket from the vending machines at the tram stops. From Zurich city you need a ticket for zone 110 (Stadtnetz), from the airport you need zones 110 and 121. The major stations are equipped with new touchscreen vending machines that accept coins, bills and credit cards. You find details about ticketing on the ZVV web site. Cost (as of 2016): zone 110 single ride CHF 4.30; zone 110 for 24h: CHF 8.60; zones 110&121 single ride: CHF 6.60; zones 110&121 for 24h: CHF 13.20. Tickets are valid for all trams, buses, trains, and even boats within the purchased zones. Note that zone 110 counts double in fare calculations. For example, a ticket for zones 110 and 121 costs the equivalent of three zones.
All inter-city train connections get you into Zurich main station (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB). From there, take a train to Zurich Oerlikon (trains every 5-10 minutes). It takes about 10 minutes to get to Oerlikon station. Before boarding a train, buy a ticket for zone 110 (see above).
Due to major construction work at Oerlikon station, the way from the station to the department is a bit more difficult than normal. A fast and easy to find way is as follows: After arrival in Zurich Oerlikon, enter the platform of track 8. Walk eastbound on that platform towards its end (make sure that track 8 is always on your right). At the end of the platform, take the stairs down to the street level. At the bottom of the stairs, turn left towards the street (Friesstrasse). Turn right into Friesstrasse. Walk 50 m to the next crossing and turn right into Binzmühlestrasse. Pass through the pedestrian tunnel under the railway tracks and then follow Binzmühlestrasse for about 100 m, where you reach our department on the left side of Binzmühlestrasse. When crossing Binzmühlestrasse at the crosswalk, carefully watch out for trams and buses running on the tracks in the middle of the road. They do have the right of way, you hardly hear them coming, and they can't stop fast enough when you overlook them.
If you want to get to our labs at Andreasstrasse, walk as described above, but turn right into Hüttisstrasse right after the pedestrian tunnel. Follow Hüttisstrasse to its end and turn left into Andreasstrasse. The AND building is no. 15 on your left.
When arriving at Zurich Airport (Flughafen), you have three options to reach us: by tram, train, or taxi.
Tram: Use tram line 10 direction Bahnhofplatz/HB. From the arrival halls, follow the tram signs to the tram station which is located on the departure level. Then follow the directions for tram travel given above. Trams run every 7-8 minutes (from 6:30-20h), travel time is 11 minutes. Tickets: you need a ticket for zones 110 and 121, see above.
Train: From the arrival halls, follow the train signs to the railway station (Zürich Flughafen) which is located in the underground. The escalator proof luggage carts in the baggage arrival area are free of charge and can be taken down all the way to the train platforms. Before taking the last stairs down to the train tracks make sure to purchase a ticket either from a ticket window or from a ticketing machine. Take trains S2, S16 or S24 running towards Zurich HB (main station) and exit at Zurich Oerlikon, which is the next station. Some fast trains (but not all of them!) towards Zurich HB also stop at Zurich Oerlikon. Trains run every 12-18 minutes, travel time is 5 minutes. After arrival at Zurich Oerlikon, follow the directions for train travel above.
Taxi: Taking a taxi is convenient, but very expensive (about CHF 35). Regular travel time is about 10 minutes, but actual travel time may vary due to traffic conditions.
